SANTA CRUZ — Junior running back Jeovany Linares rushed for five touchdowns to help the Pirates rally from a 27-6 deficit at the half in their season opener Friday.

Linares matched the school record for touchdowns in a game, set by Charlie Smith against Marello Prep in 1979.

His showing helped Gustavo Ramirez secure his first win in his head coaching debut.

“It was inspiring and jaw dropping to watch out team rally behind a makeshift offensive line,” Ramirez said.

Harbor was without left guard Alberto Fernandez, a transfer from Spain waiting to gain eligibility, and injured right guard Jose Aguirre (shoulder), so it moved two junior wide receivers, James Vega (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) and Osvaldo Villa (5-7, 160) to the line.

Junior Ferris Vitali also scored for the Pirates.

Harbor’s Diallo Thomas caused a fumble and Linares recovered the loose ball.

It was the Pirates’ highest point total since beating San Jose’s James Lick 61-0 on Sept. 3, 2021. Harbor plays at James Lick on Friday and looks to open its season with a two-game win streak for the second time in as many years. For entire article, click this link.
