YOUR FUTURE IS OUR BUSINESS

Santa Cruz County came together March 31s to celebrate the youth and the community’s investment in them at the annual Your Future is Our Business (YFIOB) luncheon. Many Santa Cruz County students, educators, parents and sponsors attended. Last year, YFIOB served more than 2,000 students county-wide. This year, in just the first quarter, that number has already been exceeded. The success of this event could not have been achieved without the support of the sponsors and attendees. Twenty-two students were awarded scholarships that ranged from $200 to $1,000. Yvette Lopez Brooks, executive director of YFIOB, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, saying, “We really could not do it without you. Your support has made it possible for us to reach even more students this year.” Rosemary Menard, water director of the City of Santa Cruz, received an award of appreciation for her exceptional leadership during the 2022 Construction Trades Day. Menard’s guidance and direction were instrumental in the event’s success. The Your Future is Our Business luncheon was a celebration of the youth and the community’s investment in them. The event was made possible by the support of sponsors who invest in the future of Santa Cruz County students. ••• Career Exploration Scholarship Charles (Charlie) Benham, Oasis High Nevaeh Karraker, Harbor High Averie Young, Cypress High Natalia Galdamez Mijango, Harbor High Elana McGrew, Santa Cruz High CTE Scholarship Isabella Chavez-Guerrero, Watsonville High Saul Cruz, Costanoa High Kenneth (Corbin) C. By GORDON KASS | [email protected] | [email protected] September 29, 2022 at 1:36 a.m. SANTA CRUZ — The logjam of contenders for the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League girls volleyball title is beginning to thin. Marginally though. Harbor High remained the three-way tie at the top of the standings by dispatching dangerous and upset-minded Aptos 18-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 ion Wednesday. The Pirates (17-3, 5-1) share the lead league with Soquel and Santa Cruz. “I think the win is definitely a big step forward,” said outside hitter Isla Johnson, who led Harbor with eight kills, seven digs and five aces. “Aptos is one of the most challenging schools. The season’s going pretty well and we can show a lot more.” The match was initially slated for Tuesday but it was pushed back a day since it conflicted with the end of Rosh Hashanah. Holly Rejfir made eight kills for the Pirates, Sabina Kemos had seven kills, and Maren O’Farrell had six kills, nine digs and four aces. For full article, click here.

By JIM SEIMAS | [email protected] | Santa Cruz Sentinel PUBLISHED: September 11, 2022 at 6:09 a.m. | UPDATED: September 11, 2022 at 12:44 p.m. SARATOGA — Harbor High’s football team did its best to overcome a slow start on both sides of the ball Saturday night, but it dropped from the unbeaten ranks after suffering a 21-14 loss to Saratoga at Benny Pierce Field. The Pirates (2-1) turned the ball over on its final possession, and had an apparent touchdown negated by a holding penalty. They also appeared to make a pair of fumble recoveries in the first half, but the officials’ rulings didn’t work in their favor. Harbor running back Diallo Thomas rushed for 81 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns on 10 carries, and teammate Jeovany Linares gained 95 yards on 15 carries. Seth Hulme, a 6-foot-3 safety, stripped Pirates quarterback Nico Edler and the Falcons’ Kaleb Andrews recovered it near midfield in the final minute. Harbor lineman Manny Nolasco was knocked unconscious during a collision as Andrews attempted to score on the fumble recovery. The injury forced a lengthy delay before Saratoga kneeled on the ball on the final play to kill the remainder of the game clock. “I’m not big for moral victories, but we played hard. The Saratoga Falcons are leaving knowing who they played tonight,” Harbor coach Gustavo Ramirez said. Click here for full article.

By GORDON KASS | [email protected] | [email protected] PUBLISHED: September 5, 2022 at 10:53 a.m. | UPDATED: September 5, 2022 at 10:57 a.m. Setter Kayla Rhee-Pizano and outside hitter Jessie Dueck return for Soquel High’s girls volleyball team, the defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion. But 2021 runner-up Santa Cruz will again provide fierce competition. For the Cardinals, All-SCCAL first-team opposite Gigi Brown leads a quartet of top players in a quest for the school’s first league title since ’01. SCCAL depth continues from there with Harbor and rebounding Aptos. “Once again the league is strong and the heavy influence of the beach game should lead to a strong showing from all Santa Cruz County teams this fall,” Harbor coach Matt Schutz said. Soquel beat Scotts Valley, Harbor and Mercy Burlingame to win the Central Coast Section Division IV title last year and defeated Menlo-Atherton and Sacred Heart Cathedral to reach the NorCal semifinals. Santa Cruz reached the CCS Division III final, where it fell to Burlingame, but ripped off three NorCal wins before dropping the NorCal final. Harbor was neck-and-neck with Soquel and Santa Cruz last year and reached the CCS semifinals. Now add in Aptos and Mount Madonna, both of whom won state titles in 2019. “It might be due to the offseason beach play, or that the competition breeds excellence, but once again we expect SCCAL to have a strong showing in CCS,” Santa Cruz coach Lina Manley-Diaz said. “I expect the top teams to be Soquel, Harbor and Santa Cruz High.” For Santa Cruz Sentinel full article, click here.

The Pirates are off to a 2-0 start for the second time in as many seasons. Harbor led 17-0 at the half, but the Comets responded with 16 straight points in the second half. Thomas scored on a 5-yard run. On defense, Harbor’s Ferris Vitali had two interceptions and a forced fumble. Thomas recovered Vitali’s lone fumble and forced two fumbles. Senior Leo LoBue, and Salazar, a sophomore who was pulled up from junior-varsity earlier in the week, made fumble recoveries. Along with Salazar, a wide receiver, the Pirates pulled up Andres Mendoza (OL/DL), Max Falconer (WR/DB) and David Quintanilla (RB/LB). Linares matched the school record for touchdowns in a game, set by Charlie Smith against Marello Prep in 1979. His showing helped Gustavo Ramirez secure his first win in his head coaching debut. “It was inspiring and jaw dropping to watch out team rally behind a makeshift offensive line,” Ramirez said. Harbor was without left guard Alberto Fernandez, a transfer from Spain waiting to gain eligibility, and injured right guard Jose Aguirre (shoulder), so it moved two junior wide receivers, James Vega (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) and Osvaldo Villa (5-7, 160) to the line. Junior Ferris Vitali also scored for the Pirates. Harbor’s Diallo Thomas caused a fumble and Linares recovered the loose ball. It was the Pirates’ highest point total since beating San Jose’s James Lick 61-0 on Sept. 3, 2021. CTE Teachers Adapt to Distance Learning
02/16/2021
By Ryan Stuart [email protected] SANTA CRUZ >> Teachers have had to make major adjustments to their classes during a global pandemic that has lasted 11 months, but career tech teachers took that one step further. Career tech courses allow high school students, and even some middle school students, the opportunity to learn about real world practices in class. The ones offered at Santa Cruz City Schools include medical technologies, mill cabinetry, photography, criminal justice and many more. “That’s what’s so wonderful about CTE,” said Career Tech Education Counsellor Sheri Williams. “They get to actually try this career on. It’s just such a fabulous program.” As great as the courses may be, they typically require some hands-on learning, which doesn’t work during a global pandemic. The last 11 months of school have been primarily online, so working hand-in-hand with a teacher has not been entirely possible. However, teachers across the district have come up with a way to continue to give students the hands-on training they need to learn the skills these courses usually provide. Take home bags full of textbooks, equipment and instructions have been the pinnacle of class preparation for these courses. “Our teachers have just done some really cool things like putting together kits for their kids and sending them home,” Williams said. For Donna Marie Stahl, a medical technologies teacher, her take home kit includes basic medical tools. Inside students found a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff, personal protective equipment similar to what doctors wear when dealing with COVID-19 patients or for surgery, as well as a first aid kit. Pete Bascacci creates miter boxes in the Harbor High School wood shop for his cabinetry, millwork and woodworking students to use at home while classes are held remotely. Boscacci teaches CTE classes at Harbor and Santa Cruz high schools and at Branciforte Junior High. Pete Boscacci has created kits for his students to take home that include a hobby saw, miter box, safety glasses, glue, ruler, pencil, clamp, Sharpie and sandpaper along with the wood needed to complete the assignments. “It gives them that opportunity at home. They’re actually finding ways to get the work done and to have fun doing so,” Stahl said. “They’re listening to their siblings’ and families’ lungs and heart sounds. It gives them that understanding of the demonstration of it.” Unfortunately, not all of her students have been able to practice on siblings or family members. Therefore, some of them have had to get creative. One student made a makeshift arm out of towels in order to practice taking someone’s blood pressure. Pete Boscacci, a mill cabinetry teacher, has had to get creative with his classes, too. Woodworking is a skill that is usually done in a shop. Boscacci’s curriculum has changed slightly due to the pandemic. One of the main focuses right now is teaching students about the different woodworking techniques. Students learn about lumber, reading plans and sketches, the properties of wood as well as sanding and finishing techniques. The class also talks about how to restore furniture. “(It’s) a lot of the same things we would do if we were in class, we’re just skipping the hands-on part, right now,” Boscacci said. “It’s an introduction to the woodworking world.” However, that doesn’t mean that students don’t have an opportunity to work with wood at home. Boscacci’s distance learning mill cabinetry class comes with a take home kit, as well. Their kits include safety goggles, glue, sandpaper and a miter box, which is used to help cut perfect angles. Boscacci also included raw materials for his students to make several projects over the course of the school year. Boscacci is aware that not all students have a workbench or garage in their homes, so he adjusted the projects accordingly. Most of the projects he assigned only required a two-foot by two-foot space. Therefore, a kitchen table, an outdoor area, or even a desk will serve as a good workstation. “I’ve made sure they had that workspace before they got involved. You don’t need a big space,” he said. “I’ve emphasized, ‘Please, don’t cut into your kitchen table.’ I haven’t had any issues with that, yet.” While distance learning has come with many challenges, the major ones are not always the most obvious. Boscacci and Stahl said the biggest challenges for them have been being away from their students and adjusting to online teaching. “That would probably be the hardest for me, not being right there with them,” Stahl said. “You miss that contact with them.” Boscacci agreed. Distance learning may also be detrimental to how students learn, but Boscacci had nothing but praise for their ability to continue with their studies and learn new skills. “I’m really impressed by the kids,” he said. “I’m so encouraged that the kids are showing up every day and I give them a lot of credit for that. It’s not easy on their end. They’re doing the best they can under the circumstances to get involved. We’re pretty inspired.”

In the Pirates’ final game March 11, they rallied for a 6-3 win over Santa Cruz, their first victory over their crosstown rival since March 25, 2015 and it snapped the Cardinals’ 27-game league unbeaten streak. Eleven of Allegri’s 15 players last spring were seniors, including Cal State Fullerton third baseman Brandon Bobo and Oklahoma Wesleyan pitcher Anthony Cortese. “This was the best team I’ve had in my 13 years,” Allegri told the Sentinel after he was named a CCS Spring Sport Honor Coach Award winner in mid-April. “It was the best offensive team I’ve ever had, the best defensive team I’ve ever had, and the best chemistry team I’ve ever had. I would’ve loved to see what this team could’ve done.” During his tenure at the helm, Allegri’s teams have qualified for the CCS playoffs five times and been recognized on the CCS Scholastic Team three times. He has served as the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League representative the past 11 years. Jacob Fowler (Alabama), Jeff Stolsig (Oregon), Joe Hughes (New York), John Childers (Maryland), Lucas Branson (Missouri), Pete Lotus (Illinois) and Ron Murphy (New Mexico) were also given NFHS Section C.O.Y. honors. “This would’ve been the icing on the cake if we had completed our season last year,” Allegri said. Harbor Recognized as an Honor Roll High School

After an extensive analysis of student data for every public school in California by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP), Harbor High was a clear leader in getting students to grade-level and beyond and has been named to the 2019-20 Honor Roll. Harbor is being recognized as a leader in student achievement. Our school is being featured on ERP’s website where educators and policymakers can seek out high-performing schools so that they can replicate success. You can view our Honor Roll website here. The 2019 - 2020 Honor Roll recognizes public elementary, middle and high schools that demonstrate high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps. For high schools, Honor Roll recognition includes measures of college readiness in students. This year, the California Honor Roll recognized 2,568 higher-performing schools in the state that are distinguished for their academic achievement and closing achievement gaps. Through national research, ERP has identified a common set of success factors in higher-performing Honor Roll schools and districts. These include clear, specific learning objectives aligned to college and career readiness, along with: Evidence-based instructional practices A defined system-wide mission of college and career readiness for all students An investment in human capital Maintenance of data and assessment systems to monitor school and student performance Resources and guidance to support schools' efforts in preparing all students for college and career Congratulations, Harbor High School!

By JIM SEIMAS | [email protected] | Santa Cruz Sentinel PUBLISHED: August 12, 2020 at 4:38 p.m. | UPDATED: August 13, 2020 at 10:23 a.m. Santa Cruz City Schools on Wednesday became the first district in Santa Cruz County to begin its 2020-21 academic school year. And campuses looked eerily similar to the way they did in the spring as the coronavirus pandemic rages on — empty. The continuation of distance learning meant students were unable to socialize face-to-face, share stories of a long, fun-filled summer — it was only long due to shelter-in-place orders — and show off their new school clothes and supplies. Welcome to the new norm, students. Offices at local schools were bustling, just not with students. “The kids bring an energy to campus that can’t be duplicated,” said Kelly Paulsen, the principal’s administrative assistant at Harbor High. “We’re getting a lot of phone calls, parents trying to get their kids into Zoom classes. We’re trying to help them navigate and get them in. Any other year we’d be saying, ‘ OK, here’s a map of the campus, you need to be in this class at this time.’ ” SCCS members include four elementary schools (Bay View, DeLaveaga, Gault and Westlake), two middle schools (Branciforte and Mission Hill) and three high schools (Harbor, Santa Cruz and Soquel). The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) will be administered to Harbor High juniors and sophomores on Wednesday, October 16th, beginning at 8:30am, free of charge with no pre-registration required. The PSAT is a practice test that prepares students for success on the SAT, a commonly required college placement test, and provides students with an early indication of what they will need to do in order to be successful in applying for and attending college. Even for students who are not already planning to attend university or those who are otherwise unsure of their post-high school plans, taking the PSAT can be a good idea as it is not unusual for the test to identify students who should be considering attending a four-year college. Additional information for students and parents about the PSAT and SAT can be found at https://www.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt. Is it fair to all concerned? 3.Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Our students shared with about 90 Rotarians and guests their personal inspirations that made it hard for the listener not to find his/her own inspiration in these brave students. Modern Brazilian Dance Class Offered at Harbor
11/06/2017
Harbor is offering a new Brazilian Modern Dance class! The class twice per week - is free for all students - and is open to anyone of any skill level who is interested in dancing. The teacher, Stephanie Emmanuel, is a recently graduate from St Mary's with her Masters in Choreography. She has extensive training in many styles of dance and will tailor the class to the interests of the group. Harbor High is extending our extracurricular offerings to meet the needs of a wider range of student interests, including students who might not be into sports but want to participate in some way beyond our offerings in a traditional classroom. Many of our students appreciate and enjoy dance as evidenced by the pride our school feels about the Escapade Dance Company and their attendance at Escapade performances. This class is a great way to get FREE basic to advanced dance training. We want anyone who might want to test the waters to jump in and give it a try:) The class runs for ~10 weeks, Mon and Wed from 4:30-6. Students should feel free to join the group at any point - hopefully over the first two weeks would be ideal. And the class should be loads of fun. There's a sign up sheet on the back wall of the Little Theater and Cathy Warner can answer any questions students may have.

Open Show organizes live social events worldwide where the public can experience compelling visual stories and interact directly with photographers, filmmakers and multimedia producers. Santa Cruz Sentinel’s Shmuel Thaler, who was named Artist of the Year, MCed event. Only five photographers were chosen by a team of show curators. Harbor High School Junior and ROP Photography student, Emma Schrank was one of the five selected artists to present her series, “The Teenage Aperture of Emotions." Emma's series and her presentation were exceptional. Her work is a perfect example of how what we do in the classroom prepares our students for the outside world. The ROP Digital Photography students at Harbor High mirror this presentation style in our critiques at the end of every unit, so Emma was well practiced in the art of presenting her work. It was an absolutely inspiring exhibit. She was the only teenager presenting, but she held the room like a pro. Youtube Link: https://youtu.be/fiapMlqs6zY.

See Harbor's Spring Musical: Grease!
04/11/2017
Harbor High's Theatre Arts program is currently in production for our Spring Musical, Grease! Here are some things that make our Theatre program at Harbor very different than other schools. First, we are completely student run! Our shows are student designed, student directed, student choreographed with students performing and doing all aspects of Technical theatre. The show is run by student leaders who have been trained and love doing what we do. This means a lot of hard work and dedication from all our students involved, with the assistance of our two adult supervisors, Cathy Warner and Lyndsey Gould when needed. Second, because we are student run, we have to do all our fundraising by ourselves to make sure we can put on the incredible productions we perform. Our show opens on April 22nd, and we run for three weekends (April 22nd, 28th, 29th and May 5th and 6th @7:30 PM and April 23rd @2 PM). For further information about the show, please contact the Harbor High Theatre Production and Marketing office ([email protected]). Thank you for supporting local theater! Harbor High Theatre Arts

By Ryan Masters, Santa Cruz Sentinel SANTA CRUZ >> When the Spanish colonizers imposed Catholicism on the indigenous communities of Oaxaca in the 16th century, forcing them to covert to Christianity, the native people resisted by blending elements of their rituals into this new religion. This blend of cultures is celebrated as Guelaguetza, which is a Zapotec Indian word that means “gift of sharing.” It’s an annual festival celebrated in the seven regions of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, but increasingly in communities in the United States as well. In its 11th year, Santa Cruz’s Vive Oaxaca Guelaguetza brings together the region’s Oaxacan community on the Harbor High School football field to honor the gods for providing ample rain and a bountiful harvest with music, dance, food and an open air market.

As many of you know, Ecuador was recently hit with a 7.8 Earthquake. The destruction and disruption of countless lives is a palpable warning of how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters at home, and in the classroom. While Ecuador might seem far away, a small community which is very close to our hearts, was devastated. This community has housed over 75 Harbor students over the past six years, kept them safe and sound and made sure that they were respected as travelers and as family. At Harbor, we have welcomed over 25 exchange students from this community, and will hopefully continue to welcome more in the years to come. Our travels to the Bahia community is what fueled the passion and inspiration for our students to start our own garden at Harbor, the Grow Quad Food Forest. GSE has set up a donation site, the link is below. Please take a moment to consider donating a small amount ($5.00 to 10.00) if you can (with the exchange rate that's really like $35.00). Humans of Harbor High--our vibrant community

ROP Photography instructor Larkin Wilson is a huge fan of Humans of New York (HONY) created by Brandon Stanton. HONY is a collection of quotes and short stories along with photographs of the people of NYC. The result is the subject of a vibrant and popular blog and now book series. After following the blog for many years Ms. Wilson was inspired to use this model to celebrate the vibrant student body and Harbor community. Ms. Wilson approached Soraya Lugo a senior and advanced photography student at Harbor and asked her to be the lead in creating the pilot HUMANS OF HARBOR HIGH (HOHH). When asked about this Lugo says, "I’ve known of Humans of New York for a while, it’s always been very intriguing to me. I love how genuine the interviewees responses are, always very honest, always very authentic. When Ms.Wilson first brought up the idea of doing sort of a mock up of HONY, but for Harbor, I was nervous to see how it might turn out. I’ve been working on it for a few weeks now, and the response has been incredible. Students are more than willing to share who they are with me, they’re really opening themselves up, and I think this will really unify the school. It goes to show we’re not so different from each other, yet still we’re still one of a kind." To follow the Humans of Harbor High blog visit: http://humansofharbor.tumblr.com

In the film, experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media weigh in, presenting empirical evidence of what some are calling the "boy crisis" and offering tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. We encourage parents and their high school aged child to attend. Harbor High School Wins State-wide Gold Ribbon Award and is recognized as a Title 1 Academic Achieving School!
02/23/2016
This article was posted as a Featured Case Study by Mitch Weathers of OrganizedBinder https://organizedbinder.com/2016/02/15/harbor-high-school-wins-gold-ribbon-award/: Two years ago Harbor High School implemented Organized Binder:Teacher. The effort, lead by principal Dick Davis, has been the model of a faculty committing to a reform initiative. All of the teachers who have participated in Organized Binder have committed to trainings, follow-up sessions, and implementing the system with fidelity and the results show their efforts. This past year Harbor High School was awarded the Gold Ribbon Award and received an additional award for being a Title I Academic Achieving School. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, "These schools are academically successful, vibrant, and innovative centers of learning and teaching." You can see other Harbor High School highlights here. BACKGROUND When principal Davis got the news that Harbor was being given these prestigious awards he contacted us to share the good news. He sent us a letter explaining that Harbor's application was focused on the school's work with Organized Binder. Excerpts from his letter are below: FEEDBACK "Big Picture: Building student-ness through using structures - Organized Binder", a letter to Organized Binder from Dick Davis, principal of Harbor HIgh School. "The Gold Ribbon visit forced us to examine our work with the Organized Binder. We built our application for this statewide recognition based on our implementation of Organized Binder. As we worked on our application "To build Student-ness" sounded good on paper; As we found out this week it is real. We are building student-ness using this system of organization. Organized Binder is guiding students to learning organization skills and helping teachers structure their lessons. For the visit we gathered ten students to meet with the folks from the County Office, this is what they had to say: “The most impressive part was that when we asked “what part of the binder has helped you the most” we got five different answers. This made us think that Organized Binder is working on many different levels and helping kids who have different needs. Some kids felt the Weekly Lifeline (Page B) was the most helpful because it kept them centered on the key area of the class. Students liked that they got a chance to think about the lesson in the Learning Log. They also said it helped them study for the test. Some students said that the Agenda (Page C) helped them stay on top of the assignments while others talked about the Academic Toolkit (Page F) as being the section that helped them the most because they could refer to it to do homework and to study for tests.” Our Gold Ribbon visitors noted that the students had a common language to talk about their classes - "they all knew what a C Page was and they all could talk about the Academic Toolkit and they knew that class starts with a Kick-off prompt and that it ends with a Learning Log that reflects on what they learned during the period." They also reported that the students were incredibly proud of their binders. It was their work. They could "see" that they were learning something by the volume alone. In writing up their gleanings from talking with the teachers, they noted that the teachers felt that Organized Binder had an impact on their teaching: Teachers agreed using the binder pushed them to have a purpose for each lesson, to prepare a prompt for the starter that related to the previous day or previewed the lesson. They also talked about how the Learning Log (Page B) pushed them to think about a closing question or activity each day. It was clear to them that the Weekly Lifeline (Page B) was a powerful formative assessment and that it was obvious from their class visits that teachers used both the opener and the closure as ways to check for understanding. “In one class it was clear that the teacher had to re-evaluate based on the way that several students responded to the opening Kick-off prompt.” We discussed the impact Organized Binder has on the instructional norms that we have set for ourselves at Harbor High School: • Setting the Purpose • Checking for Understanding • Student Engagement All three of these instructional norms are embedded in the structure that is set up by using Organized Binder. Along these lines, one parent whose son is Special Education and struggles with organization, said that her son not only knows when the tests are in his classes that use Organized Binder, but that for the first time he seems to know what to study in those classes! We have done a lot and its impact has been bigger than I had realized. Students were more focused and were feeling more supported in those classes that were using this system. After our Gold Ribbon visitors left, I had a moment to clean up the office and was glancing at the binder that we put together for their visit. Looking at the timeline of implementation, I saw again that this was only our second year with this tool... Dick Davis"
