Santa Cruz City Schools on Wednesday became the first district in Santa Cruz County to begin its 2020-21 academic school year. And campuses looked eerily similar to the way they did in the spring as the coronavirus pandemic rages on — empty.

The continuation of distance learning meant students were unable to socialize face-to-face, share stories of a long, fun-filled summer — it was only long due to shelter-in-place orders — and show off their new school clothes and supplies. Welcome to the new norm, students.

Offices at local schools were bustling, just not with students.

“The kids bring an energy to campus that can’t be duplicated,” said Kelly Paulsen, the principal’s administrative assistant at Harbor High. “We’re getting a lot of phone calls, parents trying to get their kids into Zoom classes. We’re trying to help them navigate and get them in. Any other year we’d be saying, ‘ OK, here’s a map of the campus, you need to be in this class at this time.’ ”

SCCS members include four elementary schools (Bay View, DeLaveaga, Gault and Westlake), two middle schools (Branciforte and Mission Hill) and three high schools (Harbor, Santa Cruz and Soquel). Read full Santa Cruz Sentinel article here...
