Physical Education

POLICIES, PROCEDURES and  GRADES for PE 1 and PE 2

Mission Statement:

We believe that one’s physical fitness contributes to an improved quality of life.  We encourage students to establish habits that will promote a lifetime of fitness and health.  Students will be encouraged to be critical and informed thinkers, as well as effective communicators.  Students find enjoyment in fitness activities and games that will carry them through life, while being responsible members of society and collaborative workers.

Course Description:
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn through a comprehensive sequentially planned Kinesiology and Physical Education program in accordance with the California Model Content Standards for Physical Education. Students will be empowered to make choices, meet challenges and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness and movement activity for a lifetime. Emphasis is placed on students analyzing skills for effective movement.

Philosophy:
The Physical Education program provides an opportunity for the optimal physical and emotional development of an individual. It is an integral part of the educational program and provides another discipline in which a person can become fully educated. This discipline augments other disciplines in attempting to develop young people with integrated personalities capable of functioning at a high level of efficiency in work, recreation, and everyday activities.

Expectations:
Credit is given for participation.  Attendance is mandatory.  Missed classes must be made up just like other classes on campus, whether the absence is excused or because of suit cut (non-dress).  Make up sessions are to be scheduled with instructor at a mutually agreed upon time. In certain cases, written work will be allowed at the instructors’ discretion. For absences at the end of the grading period, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate the make up with the teacher.  Teachers may elect an alternative method of makeup work.  Students who miss skill, written, or performance tests must arrange a makeup with their individual instructor.  This is a job skill.  We encourage students to take responsibility by advocating for their own education, being conscientious and by developing patterns of communication in which they speak up for themselves.

Electronic Equipment and Mobile Devices:
Cell phones, IPODs, and all other electronic devices are prohibited during all class sessions. Harbor High School cell phone policy will be strictly enforced.

Grading Policy: Students are graded upon 5 essential categories:

1. Attendance and Attire

2. Participation and Effort

3. Attitude and Teamwork

5. Physical Education Literacy

* Students have an opportunity to earn 60 points (100 points for 00 period) per week. (5 points per category, 1-4 per day). Categories 1-4 comprise 80% of the student’s overall grade. Category 5 makes up the remaining 20%. Reference the Physical Education Grading Rubric for more details on categories 1-4. *

A student will not pass if there are four (4) or more occasions of unmade up work during each six-week grading period. A “Pass/Fail” grade will be given for students who cannot participate for more than three weeks. 12 or more occasions of unmade up work during a semester will result in an “F” for the semester.

Parent Notes and Medical Excuse:
If students are suffering from a common cold they should refrain from participating in Physical Education. A parent note is required to excuse the student from activity. A written assignment will be completed in-lieu of participation. If a student is suffering from the Flu they should remain at home until they are asymptomatic.

If a student is unable to participate in P.E. for three or more consecutive days a doctor’s note will be required. All medical excuses must be filed with the office (school nurse).

Physical Education department make-up policy applies to excused absences.

Classroom Rules and Procedures

Deliberate damage to school equipment will require students to be responsible for compensation.
